Honoring Malay female writers who rewove and subvert the culture of their time.
Reframing domestic threads as quiet acts of resistance.
Overview
Woven material patterns familiar in a domestic setting are recontextualised to showcase how these Malay female writers subverted the culture of their time. From the fixed bounds of a rigid square, common notions are questioned and new ideas are presented.
How do we challenge the social fabric? “Not an if, but a must.” Literary pioneers — Raja Aisyah Sulaiman, Kumpulan Bebas Melata, Adibah Amin, Sa’eda Buang, Rasiah Halil and Associate Professor (A/P) Hadijah Rahman remind us that resistance is not merely defiance. To "balas balik" is also to repay and reciprocate, to strengthen and build, to desire and dream.

Each push and moment of writing expands the parameters of our social fabric, for both men and women.
How do we recreate the same energy of resistance and subversion into the website?
An Invite Into a Digital Exhibition
Going against the ‘expected’ nature and behavior of scrolling—we proposed a horizontal scrolling and web pages will utilize the energy of contracting and expansion into and within their own digital spaces as they reveal the voices of each writer.
The website works for both user online and user visiting the exhibition physically.
Your act of response is a form of ‘Speaking Back’
The conversation does not end here. To ignite more thoughts and opinions, a prompt related to the pioneer’s stories will be at the end of each chapter. Giving more room to ignite conversation and thoughts amongst the people.
Simply scan the QR code to answer to the prompt and get your response featured in the gallery.

A forum, a gallery and a space to speak your mind
For exhibition visitors, we bring the same energy offline where people can speak their mind or speak back with the 3 questions that prompts them to think differently. Join the many other like-minded, or not, people and read each other thoughts and opinions.
Duo-language: People can also easily toggle between languages as they browse the content.
